LAMEL GRAPHITE CAST IRON

What is Gray Iron?

Gray Iron is the oldest and most common type of iron. Probably what most people think when they think about cast iron. It is used in general engineering applications that do not require high strength or ductility. However, it is used in applications involving sliding surfaces due to its unique handling properties.

Properties:

Cost
It is the cheapest of the whole cast iron family to produce

Easy to Cast

It has the lowest melting temperature of all ferrous metals and is highly fluid in the molten state.

Excellent Bearing Features

Free graphite in the structure serves as lubricant. This caused to be use in machine tool bearings, hydraulic pistons and so on.

Excellent Machinability

Free graphite breaks down the continuity of the structure, which causes the formation of small chips during processing.

Excellent Wear Properties
Metallurgy

Gray or Cast iron has a flake-shaped graphite that causes discontinuities throughout the matrix structure, which has relatively low strength and, if any, ductility is very low.
